Getting Started with Medicare

Cartoon elderly couple skateboarding.

Getting started with Medicare can be confusing

Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older. You’re first eligible to sign up for Medicare 3 months before you turn 65. You may be eligible to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Turning 65 And New To Medicare? What's Next?

If you’re close to 65, but NOT getting Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits, the first step is to enroll in Medicare Parts A and B.

Once you have a Medicare Part B effective date, you are eligible to enroll in supplement, advantage, and prescription drug plans. There are lots of options available to you, make sure to request a consult to make sure that you are enrolling in a plan that fits your needs!

How to enroll in Parts A & B

  1. Contact Social Security office at 800-772-1213

  2. Apply online at Social Security at https://www.ssa.gov/

  3. Apply in person at your local Social Security office**Best method. Tip: Arrive 30 minutes prior to opening for shortest wait time

When Can You Change Plans?

Ever year there is an Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) when you can join, drop, or switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan (or add or drop drug coverage). You may also:

~Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan

~Join a Medicare drug plan if you're in Original Medicare

~Switch from one Medicare drug plan to another if you're in Original Medicare

In addition to that, there is an Open Enrollment Period (OEP) when you can:

~Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan with or without drug coverage

~Drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and go back to Original Medicare

~Join a Medicare drug plan

Lastly, there are Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) that can be triggered by life events like moving to a new address, losing or changing your current coverage, getting Medicaid or get Extra Help paying drugs costs, and more that may give you enrollment opportunities throughout the year.
